Glasshouse and your LMS

When I first start talking with clients about Glasshouse there is often a bit of confusion about how it works with an LMS, usually because some of the features of Glasshouse sound a bit like those of a cloud-based LMS.

This post is an exploration of the different ways Glasshouse can be used.

How Glasshouse works with your LMS

SCORM

With this approach a SCORM package is exported, downloaded and uploaded to an LMS. Learner tracking is done using SCORM. This is how most eLearning development packages work. With large media-rich learning modules this process of downloading and uploading can take time and clients often avoid making updates.

Cloud mode with an LMS

Glasshouse in cloud mode is when course material is delivered live from Glasshouse. The Glasshouse resource is launched from within an LMS. This is done using a link that includes a security key and learner details. Learner tracking is done using Experience API and a Learning Record Store. Often, back in the LMS there is course evaluation survey that is used for completion tracking.

When Glasshouse is used in cloud mode making updates is simple. It is simply a matter of going into the back end and making the change, which is then instantly shown. No downloading or uploading is needed. This a our preferred way to work because it is fast and simple.

We are beginning to see Glasshouse being used more and more as a stand-alone learning portal without an LMS. This can be done with or without a login. Learner tracking is done using Experience API and a Learning Record Store.
